Frequently asked questions

What is the EMI formula?

EMI = P × r(1+r)^n ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1), where P is the principal, r the monthly interest rate and n the number of monthly payments.

Why is early EMI mostly interest?

Because interest is charged on the outstanding balance, which is largest at the start. As the balance falls, more of each EMI goes to principal.

Flat rate or reducing balance?

This calculator uses the reducing-balance method, which is how banks and most lenders actually charge. Flat-rate quotes look cheaper than they are — always compare on EMI.

Can I check a part-prepayment?

Re-run the calculator with the reduced principal and remaining tenure to see the new EMI or the shorter term.
