BMR Calculator

Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body burns at rest, before any activity. It is the starting point for every calorie target, because activity is added on top of it. Enter your sex, age, weight and height and this calculator estimates your BMR with the widely used Mifflin-St Jeor equation, and shows what that means at common activity levels.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation?

It estimates BMR from sex, weight, height and age, and is the equation most dietitians use as a starting point. It is an estimate, not a medical measurement.

Is BMR the same as daily calorie needs?

No. BMR is rest only. Daily needs are higher once activity is added, which is why the tool also shows totals at sedentary, light, moderate and very active levels.

Why do men and women get different results?

The equation uses different constants for men and women, reflecting average differences in body composition at the same weight and height.
